Cool and crisp morning in Hawaii that was perfect for our Saturday ride. Typically, we depart our Hawaii Kai hale and head for the hills, getting Kamiloiki and Makapu’u hills out of the way first. Then we rode toward town, to our usual turn-around point at Diamond Head Lookout and then back. So, you fast little Boca peloton, when you passed us along the golf course in Kahala, we had already been through the toughest part of our ride. Thanks for the pull. And who was that chick with the banana stuck in her shorts? She acted all fixie. Fail.

To me it’s hard to believe that the girl in the photo at Makapu’u is the same girl in the photo at Diamond Head. But they’re both me, today, in what I guess are different lighting situations. I decided we would do the hills today, and when we do that we do them first. It wasn’t as hard as the week before. I did a lot of out-of-the saddle riding today, and I think I may feel that in my thighs soon.
Here’s a pic of me at Diamond Head Lookout taken by John:
When we were coming back from Diamond Head, along the Waialae Country Club and its road that leads to Kalanianaole Highway, we got passed by a little group of cyclists, mostly guys and a girl, and then another girl who clearly was not with them, but kinda hitched on. She was distinctive: banana stuck in her exercise pants, backpack, and rude. She might as well have been on a fixie. I bet she didn’t wear deodorant.
There was the lane coned off on Kalanianaole Highway, and let me tell you that riding with a group in such situations is actually quite reassuring. We take care of each other, we are substantial enough to be noticed, and of course, we pedal within the rules and regulations designed to assure everyone who does the right thing gets to live. I got dropped a bit on Kal Hwy, but John rode with the group, and eventually I caught up with them at a red light. As it turned green, one guy said: “GREEN, GREEN GASOLINE!” I thought that was fun. We all got over the Hawaii Kai bridge together, taking the right lane, and we then all turned into Portlock. So I pedaled up to that guy and told him that I blog about my rides and today’s will be called GREEN, GREEN GASOLINE. We said our goodbyes and John and I turned onto Lunalilo Home Road and turned right at the second Kaumakani Street and headed up the hill toward Koko Head District Park and our ‘hood.
Good ride. Thanks Boca riders for letting us hitch on for the last leg of our ride. It got me out of my ‘I’m on the downside’ of this ride mentality and kept me roaring on the road! That was good.
