Koko Crater vs. Koko Head

@postaday 276; #postaday2011.

Departed the Mothership early to take Kid2 to her doctor appointment. We had Kid1 with us, too. Submitted the prescriptions and then inquired if my new bifocals were ready. THEY WERE! New sunglasses and IRL glasses. It’s official. I accept my failing eyesight. I’m adjusting.

We Benderettes planned on doing our #5Kin100days before leaving town, so our next stop was Triangle Park, Kahala. I was done by 5:45. We then joined the flow of traffic toward our neighborhood volcano, Koko Crater, which is still smoldering and aglow with hotspots. It’s very similar to how the volcanoes look on the Big Island, when the lava works its way down the mountain and sets everything in its path ablaze.

The air here at home is sweet and smoky with burnt kiawe. Makes me wish we had some ribs smokin’ up.

Here’s an easy way to remember the difference between our two kokos.

  • Koko Crater is behind Koko Head.
  • Koko Head juts into the ocean.
  • Koko Crater has the trail and treacherous trestle.
  • Koko Head has the water tank and communications towers.
  • Koko Crater has farms and Kaiser High School on it.
  • Koko Head has Koko Head Elementary School and fancy houses on it.
  • Koko Crater has a xeriscape garden and horse stables.
  • Koko Head cradles Haunama Bay.

Wino’clock, folks.
