When I get to work on Mondays, I clean up pretty nice. I like a sleek look, perhaps black tights, fun shoes, a skirt down to there, a top that hugs. If I’m going to be part of the landscape, then I want to be a good part. Plus, John never objects to career clothing purchases, or work-out clothing purchases, so yah-hoooo!
If I’m in the mood for a relaxed look, or I think the commute or weather will give me a fashion challenge, I’ll reach for the more rugged not-quite-jeans, not-quite refined pants that keep me just on the right side of the career-look line. I love Casual Friday and I have fun with it. I like rockin’ the boots and jeans, a rock-n-roll t-shirt, fun earrings. Stuff like that.
On the weekends, or even after work, all bets are off. I scruff it up. Denim shorts, tank tops. Bicycle jersey, shorts and gloves for my rides, hair up, hair down, hair out. No hair shirts. Haha.
Because Friday is casual, I have turned Thursday into not so casual. I put on some nice pants, a crisp top and a suit jacket to create a pretty career package. I might even do something with my hair! Sometimes people say something, sometimes I go the whole day and no one notices. However, not to be ignored, I have been known to go into one of my manager’s offices to show her how my cheetah skirt now has matching platform shoes. Purrrfection! She didn’t approve of the Electric Eel, aka Nose Miner Green Frost, nail polish. Hah. I gots to be me.
My tummy growling yesterday, I decided to slip into my jacket, slip on my sunglasses and slide some lip shimmer on and go hunt down some lunch. Another manager spotted me and remarked at how well turned out I was. And then she asked if I might be heading out for a job interview, with what I perceived (AND HOPED!) was disappointment. I assured her I was not and told her how I like to dress up a little bit on Thursdays. Then I think I perceived her letting out a sigh of relief, or at least I HOPED SO!
Anyway, you managers out there who like your staff and think you want them to stick around, it’s a good idea to throw them a bone about how nice they look and how you don’t want them looking for greener pastures at other work sites! It’s a real attagirl boost to the career gal ego!
