Attention Hawaii Safeway Shoppers

Since I’ve started this blog, I’ve been asked to pitch for lip balm, purses and swim suits. I considered it for a few minutes. I love to swipe me some Burt’s Bees balm on my lips, I have a chronic purse addiction, and when I’m healthy I spend as much time in a swim suit on a surfboard or a SUP board as possible. But I fail to act. I smiled to myself, and let the opportunities slip by.

But then Safeway got in touch. I frequent the Hawaii Kai Safeway regularly, and I even do my Bank of Hawaii Bankoh banking there. Since I’m in there once or twice a week anyway, why not consider the offer?

Safeway is running a new program in Hawaii called Just4U that reviews your shopping record, thanks to data mined via your Safeway card, and creates your personal Safeway Just4U Website with coupons and offers for items you often buy. This week they are suggesting to me asparagus, Swiss cheese, Monster energy drink, Bryer’s Ice cream, Philadelphia Brand cream cheese, and Lucerne eggs. Maybe they’ll clue in to my seltzer habit and realize I’m also a fan of fennel, mushrooms, swirly rye bread and Brussels sprouts.

Remember when the grocery store club cards first came out? We’d be asked to provide our personal information in exchange for discounts. Many were reluctant. Many didn’t want Big Brother knowing how much beer or aerosol cheese they were buying at the family grocery store. Who knew what could be done with such personal data? We’ve all gotten used to it. Me? I honestly don’t think anyone beyond a Safeway bot cares what I buy. I’m happy to get a customized list of suggestions and offers to help me stretch the family budget.

Here’s what you do:

1. Dig out your Safeway Club card.

2. Fill out the online form at Just4U (it will prompt you for your Safeway Club card number).

3. Click on the offers provided. They’ll be automatically loaded onto your card.

The specials loaded from the website are not visible to other shoppers in the store. It’s between you, your card, and the check-out clerk, and that’s quite unique.

Yes, Safeway got in touch with me and asked if I’d help promote its Just4U program through my blog. I’m getting a $50 gift card to do so. The journalist in me wants to come clean regarding that. I like shopping at Safeway. If you drop a few bucks at your Hawaii neighborhood Safeway, consider signing on to get your own customized discounts. Given these precarious economic times, every little bit helps.
