Rethinking goals

@postaday39 #postaday2011

Notice how I haven’t mentioned a workout in a few days? This cold/flu/upper-respiratory infection I have been harboring for three weeks now isn’t budging. The vog doesn’t help. Ask my colleagues. Even the ones over on the other side of my cube. There is an alien living in my chest. WTPho?

I was up to 50 days of really vigorous workouts at 24-Hour Fitness, with weekend bike rides of 20-30 miles, feeling strong and really pleased with how my recovery from my Achille’s tendon break had been going. Then a few weeks ago, someone sat near me on theBus with a runny nose, a colleague got really sick, and I pick up my kids at two different schools. Who knows? Who to blame? If you’re on Oahu, you hear it everywhere. People are coughing, sneezing and sniffing a lot. It’s awful.

It’s been about a year now where we are hearing about scientific studies that indicate that people are fat and unhealthy because they don’t get enough sleep. I thought how I must be bucking that trend. I got up at 320 in the morning to work out at 24HF for an hour at 4 a.m. and then I’d drive the van home where I’d clean up real fast and walk down to theBus stop by 545. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to bed most nights before 10 p.m. At most, I’d be getting 5 hours of sleep. Believe me, I might be in bed by 10, but I wasn’t asleep until 11 or 12 sometimes.

So now I’m rethinking this fitness routine. Thinking about maybe going to the gym after dinner. Thinking about three or four workouts during the week instead of five. Thinking about riding on Saturday and Sunday because it gives me the most returns in joy. I wonder what it’s like at 24-Hour Fitness Hawaii Kai between 8-10 p.m.? Surely I could find a free elliptical!

In the meantime, I think I’ll continue to sleep in all the way to 445 a.m. and get up, get ready for work, and get skinny (Hah!). At least for as long as I’m hosting this beast in my chest.

  1. Listen to your body. I totally understand the sleep thing getting an average of <4 hours per night myself. Best wishes to you in this!

  2. You can find an eliptical in the evening! When I was being “good” I always hit the gym around 7:30 pm. I’ve tried the early morning routine but i can’t do it. I need my sleep. I’m trying to get back to the gym during lunch but that has been impossible lately with work. I’m somewhat inspired to get back on the wagon now that I’ve completed two of three sessions with a trainer. Maybe I’ll see you at the gym!

  3. I saw that you had been seeing a trainer, Shawn! How is that going? Maybe you will see me. As groggy as I am in the evening, a workout and a shower would be wonderful right before bed! I’ll see what John thinks.

  4. Sometimes even Superwoman has to slow down, huh? Good that you listen to your body and not the alien in your chest. 😀 Get well, and then stronger.
