Trip highlight: Visiting Performance Bicycle in Philly.

The shiny bikes at Performance Bicycle in Philly.

Things are almost back to normal. Back to work will be back to normal. I’m slowly catching up on Hawaii time, and I’m hoping John doesn’t wake me up at 5:45 again tomorrow. Dude. Mercy.

I’m really looking forward to some bicycle rides this weekend. I have a few new jerseys that I got when we crossed the bridge from New Jersey to go to Performance Bicycle in Philly. I was in heaven! I got to try on jerseys that I only see in catalogs and got to buy two. I had to restrain myself. You can’t put a new Scattante in the over-head compartment!

Speaking of working out and waking early, I’m glad we did get to 24-Hour Fitness Hawaii Kai at about 8 a.m. this morning. Interesting crowd at that time. As you may or may not know, I usually darken its doors at about 4 a.m. and I’m out of there before 5:10 a.m. That’s the way it goes when you’ve combined a career with mom duties. Today there was this old guy jumping rope and running around and doing pushups and leg raises and air punches. When I say old, I mean like 78 years old. If you are that old and older and you do not feel old, like I suspect this guy, then more power to ya. This guy was getting sly looks from the other dudes sweatin’ to ESPN and FOX news. A regular Jack LaLanne. Since he was doing push ups like a new military recruit, I dare say he’s in better shape than I am. Just kinda wonder what the back story is.

Slowly the suitcases are being unpacked. Laundry is done. The girls had homemade mac-n-cheese for dinner. I had a glass of merlot. Mythbusters is on the flat thanks to NetFlix. Of course it will probably be a month or two before I’ve really recovered from this trip. Once that last bill is zeroed out, we’ll start thinking about when to go back next. Who knew you could have so much fun in South Jersey?

Last update for June 2011. Next category is July 2011. Thanks for reading!

  1. OK, Paula, I gotta put in my two cents pm this one… Performance is probably my least favorite place in the world. I’m sorry, normally I love and agree with your blog, but they’re the Walmart of bike stores and they’re putting all the small local bike shops out of business. I know that’s the way capitalism works and stuff, but there’s something to be said for the little guys who still send their mechanics to mechanic school and still support local race teams and sponsor local rides. I’ve never seen Performance sponsor a local ride, race, or bike path cleanup, and from my bike store friends that have worked at one (which most try it out at some point) the emphasis is on selling, not getting customers on bikes that are properly sized and going to fit the rider’s needs. OK, off my soap box.

Glad you had a great trip! Looks like it was a LOT of fun!
